1st Horse Riding Lesson

I decided to take up horseback riding just two days before my 19th birthday. While a few friends had dabbled in horseback riding during their younger years, I hadn’t quite earned the label of a “horse girl” myself. However, one of my friends, who used to ride, joined me on this adventure, finding it nostalgic given her formative years spent in the saddle.

Upon our arrival, my excitement led me to promptly record a video showcasing my riding attire for the day. I had invested in jodhpurs and chose a jumper that I thought fitting for the occasion. Having thoroughly researched the appropriate riding attire, I confidently selected a jumper and boots, believing it to be a good choice.

Approaching the lesson, I held no preconceived notions, only anticipating an enjoyable experience. As we entered the stables, the urban hustle of London faded away, replaced by the charm of a countryside farm complete with stables. Passing through the gates, we were greeted by an enthusiastic dog, adding an endearing touch to our arrival.

Our next stop was the reception area, where we greeted a friendly lady who directed us to the boots and helmets section in preparation for the lesson. Despite the somewhat uncomfortable boots, resembling Wellington boots in style but lacking in comfort, I couldn’t contain my excitement at dressing the part. Feeling like a jockey at the Grand National, I beamed with enthusiasm.

We were then guided across the arena, where the horses resided. The sight of the horses immediately lit up my face, and I felt an inexplicable affinity and fondness towards them. Entering the stable, we encountered a charming grey and white horse named Bear. The teacher walked us through the tacking-up process, explaining terms like girth, saddle, and saddle pad. While much of the terminology flew over my head, I didn’t foresee needing to recall it, as I initially didn’t have thoughts of pursuing the sport long-term.

Yard helpers assisted my friend and I with tacking up, the teacher then allowed us to lead the horses. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself holding the reins of the cutest pony ever.

The coach told me to step up on a plastic block, later identified as a mounting block, allowing me to mount on the horse. It was quite a surreal moment, sitting on an animal weighing nearly 1000 kilograms. With guidance from the coach, I mounted the horse, receiving a compliment for my posture. As the pony took its first stride, I was astounded by the movement, finding it amazing.

During the lesson, a delightful young child, around seven years old, led me around the arena. I gripped the reins for dear life, all while sharing joyous moments with my friend in the same arena. After circling the arena a few times, it was time to dismount. Slightly nervous about the process, I somewhat slithered off the horse, unintentionally performing a twirl as my leg grazed its rear.

I was then allowed to lead the horse out of the arena, a heartwarming experience as the horse proved to be an absolute saint. My friend and I both agreed that this had to become a recurring activity as we thoroughly enjoyed our time with the horses. It was undeniably one of the best experiences of my life, prompting me to consider further moments in the equestrian world.

Happy riding!

Best Wishes,
