Spontaneously, a friend and I drove from London to the countryside to watch a polo match. As avid polo enthusiasts, we were excited to watch our first game of the season, featuring La Dolphina Great Oaks and Green Gates. Stepping onto the fields, I was immediately struck by the beauty of the surroundings. The meticulously maintained field glowed in the vibrant sunlight.

The players showcased exceptional skill throughout the match. As a novice rider, I was intrigued to observe the minimal trotting, initially mistaking it for a rising trot until my friend corrected me, explaining it was actually a rising canter! Witnessing the players’ passion and connection with their horses was truly inspiring.

The match consisted of 7 chukkas, diverging from the typical 5/6 in a high-goal match. The intensity heightened in the 6th chukka as both teams were tied at 11 goals each.

An additional chukka was held to break the tie (a moment akin to penalties in football) which resulted in La Dolphina Great Oaks emerging victorious with a final score of 12-11.

One of the highlights for me was observing a groom tying up a pony’s tail in the traditional polo style, a first-time experience that added to the charm of the event. It was heartwarming to see all the ponies in excellent condition, a testament to the care and attention they receive from their handlers.

I also discovered an interesting fact – most polo ponies are mares! It left me pondering the reasons behind this intriguing phenomenon.

Overall, the match was as an excellent start to the polo season. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store!

  1. Well observed about the mares. Some stallions play but having your balls cut off lowers your zest for life. Thankfully I still have mine and play polo quite well. X
