In September, following my enjoyment of several equestrian events, I decided to resume riding lessons. Unfortunately, the day I had chosen for my lesson coincided with one of the hottest days of the year. Despite the oppressive heat, I proceeded with the lesson as I had booked it a week prior without checking the weather forecast. Opting for an all-white outfit, I was unaware of an unspoken rule at the stables—never wear white unless it’s competition day.
During the lesson, I rode Skye, a beautiful horse with a gentle temperament and a stunning white and grey-speckled coat. I had the opportunity to lead Skye back to the stables and assist with untacking. In conversation with the yard helper, I admitted to a fear of maneuvering around horses.
My apprehension was evident when moving under Skye’s neck from the front. This mild fear stemmed from my unfamiliarity with such large animals, leading to a comical overreaction to a sudden movement by the horse.
I was struck by the calmness displayed by young children around the horses, inspiring me to cultivate a similar demeanor. A reassuring remark from a young boy further highlighted this, as he comforted me with the words, “She won’t do anything to you.” I aim to develop this calmness over time.
Fortunately, my clothes remained spotless after leaving the stables 😉
Happy riding!
Best Wishes,
